UNAIR NEWS – Vocational high schools (SMK) are encouraged to produce more competent graduates. Before graduating, students are equipped with aspects of soft skills and character and a work culture that complements aspects of hard skills. The education is provided according to the needs of the business, industry, and the professional world.

Efforts to realize mastery of these competencies are made by participating in the government program, SMK-PK. The program is the development of Vocational High Schools with specific expertise competencies in improving quality and performance, which is strengthened through partnerships and alignment with the business, industry, and the professional world. The goal is to make SMK a referred vocational school that can function as a driving force and a center for improving the quality and performance of other vocational schools.

Currently, Universitas Airlangga is trusted to assist and provide dissemination and collaborate with SMKN 4 Jember by inviting industrial representatives. One of the representatives invited to collaborate is By.U,  the first digital provider in Indonesia. SMKN 4 Jember will create a digital platform prepared together with the industry with the assistance of Dr. Rahmat Yuliawan, SE., MM., CHRM from the Faculty of Vocational Studies, Universitas Airlangga. The event takes place on 18-19 October 2021.

The role of teachers and principals is also vital for the success of this program. The dissemination is held to provide an understanding on the management of SMK-PK by collaborating with related industries. SMKN 4 Jember invites Alfamart (industrial class), Gramedia, Head of Service, Dispenda, School Committee, and all parties who will be key actors in implementing SMK PK in the future.

“Hopefully, this program will produce graduates who are absorbed in the professional world or become entrepreneurs through in-depth and comprehensive alignment of vocational education with the professional world,” said Dr. Rahmat Yuliawan, SE., MM., CHRM, the supervisor for SMKN 4 Jember from the Vocational Faculty UNAIR.

This dissemination and collaboration are expected to optimize the business world and industry to develop an appropriate SMK curriculum by combining the national curriculum so that the expected educational goals can be achieved and realized. (*)
