UNAIR NEWS – The community service team from the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Universitas Airlangga held a social service activity entitled Development of Bakery, Cake, and Cookies Business on September 12, 2021. It was held in the Addimyati Nurul Iman Islamic Boarding School, West Sukolilo Village, Labang District, Bangkalan.

“We see the potential of the Islamic boarding schools to become a leading MSME by taking advantage of their location, which is very close to the Suramadu Bridge,” said Siti Rahayu Nadhiroh as the Head of the Community Service Team.

Nadhiro and the community service team consisting of Diansanto Prayoga, Aisyah Dewi Muthi’ah, and Nutrition Undergraduate students of FKM UNAIR introduced Moringa Chocolate (Chokelor) with a picture of the Suramadu Bridge on it. Through this innovation, Nadhiro wanted to help the local economy.

A lot of Moringa trees grow in some villages near Suramadu. However, they have not been fully utilized. On the other hand, chocolate is a snack favored by all people and can be stored for a long time.

“Most probably, the Moringa is processed into vegetables. Thus, we innovate it into chocolate. We hope that Chokelor can become a superior product as well as a typical Madurese souvenir,” hoped Nadhiro and PP Addimyati Nurul Iman’s caretaker, Nyai Hajjah Thoyyibah Ishaq.

Bangkalan Regency itself is a strategic area. The presence of the Suramadu Bridge there connects the capital of East Java Province and Madura Island.

“The boarding school cooperative has been running by selling food products. But the packaging is still simple. The form of marketing is only word of mouth with limited consumers. Despite such conditions, the opportunity is huge because the location is very strategic, near the Suramadu Bridge,” said the lecturer of the Nutrition Department of FKM UNAIR.

Nadhiroh said there were several activities in this community service. These included introducing Moringa chocolate products with the Suramadu Bridge logo, ongoing assistance for PIRT licensing for food products, and ways to market the products through the marketplace.

On that occasion, the Head of West Sukolilo Village, Labang Bangkalan was also present. He was enthusiastic and supportive of the innovation by the community service team.

Nadhiro hoped that this community service activity would have an impact on the local economy, including residents of West Sukolilo, Labang District, which is the closest village to the Suramadu Bridge.

“This activity is also part of UNAIR’s efforts to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 2 “No Hunger,” SDG 8 “Decent Work Economic Growth,” and SDG 17 “Partnership for the Goals,” she concluded. (*)
