UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) lecturer, Dr. I Gusti Aju Wahju Ardani, drg., M.Kes., Sp.Ort, has released three new books on craniofacial studies. Dr. Ardani said that it has not been studied intensively in Indonesia.

Craniofacial science, in general, is a plastic surgery that shapes and improves a person’s function and appearance on the facial bones, head, and soft tissues. To highlight the craniofacial science, the three books were launched simultaneously in May 2021 by Airlangga University Press (AUP).

The first book is entitled “Basics of Craniofacial Growth After Birth”, which contains basic theories about facial growth. The second book is entitled “Craniofacial Bone Growth Theory”, while the third book is entitled “Craniofacial Growth After Birth”.

These three books highlight the theories of bone growth that have not been widely studied in Indonesia so far. “Reading materials about craniofacial in Indonesia are still dominated by books and studies from Western countries. When every nation and race has different facial bone characteristics,” added the lecturer at the Orthodontics Department.

Apart from being a reference, the books written in three months are also useful for lecture materials and references for research in the craniofacial field. Moreover, the second book specifically discusses various craniofacial theories that still have the potential to be explored and developed.

“The science of facial bone development is very complex. It took a long time to develop the theory. That’s why some colleagues and alumni have contacted me; they ask for this books and use them for college or research purposes,” she explained.

Despite getting a positive response, Dr. Ardani said that the books took a year for the editing process before they could be released. The three books were originally one unit. However, due to a large number of pages, it was finally divided into three parts.

On the other hand, the books have been the dream of Dr. Ardani, who is very interested in craniofacial studies. “Not many academics are interested in this study. But because there were academic demands and the desire of some of my students for easier to understand the material, I finally realize this dream of mine,” she said.

Dr. Ardani hoped that the three books would be able to contribute to the development of craniofacial studies in Indonesia, as well as in Western countries. Moreover, these books propose a unified theory that is expected to be a useful academic reference for national dentistry practitioners.

For those who want to get the book, they can directly contact Dr. Ardani or buy access to e-books on Google Books. The hardcopy printing process is currently underway, following the enthusiasm of several colleagues in dentistry who want to use the book as an academic reference.

UNAIR, as one of the best universities in Indonesia, encourages the entire academic community to contribute to the wider community. (*)
