Dr. Brahmana Askandar Tjokroprawiro, dr., SpOG (K), as the head of the department, said the department has golden age staff; 42% of all active staff are 30-40 years old, so they have extraordinary resources.
“Currently, FK UNAIR Department of Obstetrics Gynecology consists of 5 divisions; Gynecology Oncology Division, Fetomaternal Division, Fertility, Endocrinology and Reproduction Division, Social Obstetrics Division with 35 active staffs and 13 senior staffs (special lecturers and extraordinary lecturers),” he said.
Every week, the department has the opportunity to take part in a ward round or clinical discussion with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology – Mc Gill University – Montreal, Canada.
From the education level, 14 staff have doctoral education, and 8 of them are currently attending doctoral studies. It is expected that in the next 2 years, the department will have 22 staff with doctoral degrees out of all 35 active staff. Moreover, the department has 2 active professors and 6 senior professors as extraordinary lecturers or partner lecturers.
The department has established several international collaborations with overseas universities in teaching and learning processes and joint publications. Every year, several doctors from other countries reside in Surabaya to teach in undergraduate, specialist and sub-specialist students.
Regarding the department’s annual program, he said the state higher education tri dharma program is always improved every year. In education, curriculum arrangement and the process of making models or mannequins for the learning process become an alternative to teaching during the pandemic era.
In the field of research, an improvement in the number of international publications by Obstetrics Gynecology department staff is made by creating a research tree and holding regular webinars in obstetrics and gynecology with various topics with national or international speakers.
“We collaborate on publications together with international experts. Some of the publications are joint publications with foreign academics in reputable international journals,” he said.
In community service, the Department of Obstetrics Gynecology has an active role in reducing maternal mortality through the Social Obstetrics Division, which oversees the program both in Surabaya and in East Java. They also have a regular visitation program to 10 hospitals in East Java.
The department also holds webinars for doctors and SpOG doctors every Wednesday from 10.00-11.00 every week. All staff members are expected to present their knowledge to increase the professionalism of doctors and SpOG doctors.
“Furthermore, this method is a form of community service; the lecturers also have the opportunity to obtain community service and support credits every week,” he said.
So far, the department has produced many graduates active in their respective fields, such as Prof. Dr. dr. Budi Santoso, SpOG (K) as Dean of FK UNAIR (2020-2025), Dr. dr. Poedjo Hartono, SpOG (K) as Chairman of the MPPK PB IDI and former chairman of PP POGI and Prof. dr. M. Dikman Angsar, SpOG (K) Former Director of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, as well as the former director of RSUA, and many more.
Apart from having many strengths and advantages, the department’s challenges in the future are also more demanding due to the rapid development of technology. FK UNAIR Obstetrics and Gynecology graduates must have competencies that are not inferior to obstetric gynecology specialists abroad, even with limited facilities and infrastructure.
“The challenge in the future is that we have to be able to compete with graduates in the field of Obsgyn from overseas universities, which may and can establish a Medical Faculty in Indonesia,” he concluded.
UNAIR, as one of the best universities in Indonesia, encourages its academicians to have global competitiveness. (*)
