UNAIR NEWS – Various adjustments have been made to face the Covid-19 pandemic, including in the field of education. In this regard, on Wednesday and Thursday, May 19-20, 2021, the sixth-semester students of Medicine Undergraduate Program (S1), Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), continued their learning in hybrid method, especially for Medical Skill 4 course.

Rimbun, dr., M.Si., as the person in charge of this course, explained that referring to UNAIR Rector circular regarding the implementation of the learning process in the even semester 2020/2021, hybrid learning is the combination of online and offline learning in one session.

“So, on Wednesday (19/05/21), a lecturer taught and demonstrated medical skill live in the presence of 32 students in Propadeus Lecture Hall, while 229 other students following the lecture through zoom meeting and they can still interact with the lecturer well,” she explained.

Besides lectures on May 19-20, 2021, dr. Rimbun also revealed there will be practical sessions of Medical Skill 4, conducted with a blended learning, a combination of online and offline learning.

In the practical sessions, students will be divided into small groups. Five groups or 62 students will do the practical sessions offline, in campus, while the other 16 groups will do them online.

“It is the first time for Medical Skill 4 block to apply hybrid and blended learning. Previously, for Medical Skill 1 block, the second-semester students only applied hybrid learning, while for Musculoskeletal system block, the fourth-semester students only applied blended method,” she explained.

Furthermore, dr. Rimbun revealed there are some requirements for students who want to join the offline lecture. Some of them are parents’ permit, written statement on any comorbid disease, antigen/PCR swab test before the lecture day, putting on personal protection equipment (PPE) with three layers of medical masks and face shield during lecture, and applying strict health protocols.

Finally, dr. Rimbun hoped that students could achieve the ideal competence in line with the curriculum through hybrid learning. In her opinion, the achieved competence may not be as ideal as the one achieved from full offline learning, but it is expected to be closest to ideal with hybrid method.

“For the Medical Skill 4 block, we hope students have the competence to perform some specific clinical skills to mannequin based on the correct procedure, by applying sterilization and universal precaution. We have done our best amid this pandemic,” she concluded on May 20, 2021.
