UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga PSDKU Aquaculture Undergraduate Study Program in Banyuwangi with Shrimp Club Indonesia (SCI) held a Shrimp Pond Farming Laboratory Training on Thursday, May, 20, 2021. The activity was held for 5 days until Monday, May 24, at Campus A UNAIR Banyuwangi by presenting several speakers who are competent in their fields.

To UNAIR NEWS team , Arif Habib Fasya, who is in charge of the activity, explained that the accuracy of laboratory data is very important in determining the actions made for the pond. He said that the slightest bias or data error would have a bad impact later if the actions taken were wrong.

“A simple example is when the DO content in the pond is low, but because the laboratory assistant reads normal DO, no handling efforts are made, it can have a serious impact on other parameters such as pH, ammonia toxicity, nitrite and nitrate content, which can all cause death in shrimps,” he explained.

“So, this event is held to facilitate practitioners and students who want to improve competence in managing water quality parameters in the laboratory,” he added.

SCI held similar activities in 2009, 2010 and 2013, SCI invited UNAIR Banyuwangi Aquaculture study program to facilitate the activities. Only by spending Rp. 250,000 participants could gained practical knowledge from sampling, parameter measurement to laboratory data analysis.

“Because it is supported by UNAIR Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, this activity is quite cheap compared to other similar activities. In 2009, the entrance fee was around Rp. 2,500,000, “he said.

The presenters of the event were the Chairman of SCI Banyuwangi; Ir. Yanuar Toto Rahardjo, SCI Technical Team; Ir. Suprapto, Chief Executive of SCI; Ir. H. Hardi Pitoyo, lecturers at FPK Unair; M. Faizal Ulhaq and Daruti Dinda Nindarwi and several teams from UNAIR.

There were 34 participants attending, from laboratory assistants, pond technicians, pond entrepreneurs and students. The activity was carried out by providing materials in classroom for 1 day, practicing in the laboratory for 3 days and on the last day participants were invited to go to the pond to measure and analyze water quality data in the pond.

Teguh Widodo, one of the pond entrepreneurs from Cilacap revealed that through this training, besides gaining theories, they also gained technical insights. They also know how to process and read laboratory data to determine what steps should be made.

“Because as practitioners, what we emphasize is what technical steps should be made next, besides learning how to obtain data, we are also taught by extraordinary speakers how to analyze it,” he concluded. (*)
