UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA) held Virtual Interprofessional Education (IPE) on Thursday, April 29, 2021. IPE is something that happens when two or more professions learn from each other and collaborate in order to improve service quality. The event was attended by around 200 participants, consisting of students and lecturers in health and non-health groups such as Law, at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR).

As the first speaker, Dr. Afif Nurul Hidayati, dr., Sp.KK (K) said that IPE is important and must be studied by students, especially those who will study at UNAIR Teaching Hospital. This is related to not only students from the health group who study there, but also from other groups such as social and humanities.

IPE is needed considering that patient treatment requires a lot of professionals such as doctors, pharmacists, nutritionists, psychologists, and so on with one coordinator. “All professions are needed to provide optimal patient care, but still need a coordinator. There is no profession that is higher or more important than others, “said dr. Afif.

According to dr. Afif, students must study according to their respective competencies and collaborate with each other. “Students are still obliged to study according to their competence or profession. Besides learning for competence, collaboration and communication are needed as team members, “added dr. Afif.

Through IPE, students can learn to collaborate and communicate well with all parties, including patients and their families. Furthermore, dr. Afif said that it is expected to optimize the quality of patient health and safety.

“All medical schools have an obligation to give birth to professionals who are ready to access and understand the needs of public health, which is obtained by coaching through inter-professional cooperation and collaboration,” wrote dr. Afif quoted the Macy Foundation. Furthermore, dr. Afif also quoted from the Institute of Medicine that all health professionals are members of an interdisciplinary team within IPE who must be educated to provide care to clients.

Not only can it be applied in the context of patient care in hospitals, IPE can also be implemented in the realm of the general public (community), including through community service program (KKN) and each faculty. Besides, as explained by dr. Afif, IPE is not only important for medical schools but also for non-medical schools.

Regarding the importance of IPE, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sektiari Lukiswanto, DEA., Drh., as Vice-Rector for Academic, Student and Alumni Affairs will make it (IPE, ed) as UNAIR’s flagship program.

“New students in 2021 have started to come into contact with IPE as UNAIR’s flagship program,” he said.

As the best university in Indonesia , UNAIR supports its students to excel in national and international levels.
