UNAIR NEWS – Jalan Dupak Bangunsari, Dupak, Krembangan is the former place of gang dolly red-light district of Surabaya, East Java. This area became the public spotlight of prostitution that lasted until 2012. The dark history leaves a terrible stigma for the community around that area. Concern over the emergence of similar practices that contaminate the community, UNAIR students conducted community service activity in the Dupak community area of sexual violence socialization.
The group includes students with a background in Law, International Relations, and Biology initiated to help the local social problem that arises in the community. Group 160 of KKN BBM 62 UNAIR conducted a socialization activity with a discussion on sexual violence on Monday, June 20. According to Head of the group Eka P. Fadhila, the existence of socialization and education about sexual violence in the field of law and health can help people to be aware of various forms of actions and consequences of sexual violence.
“Thus, it can prevent and overcome these problems. Logically the activities that focus on this awareness will have the effect of suppressing some activities that lead to sexual harassment,” he said.
The student who is familiarly called Eka also explained, in implementing more productive activities, it was given by emphasizing the community’s understanding of the material content delivered. Education is carried out from door-to-door and supported by poster attachment as an effort to remind the community indirectly. In line with the planned program, Imam, as the Head of the local RT, also confirmed that in the past, this region was indeed a red light district.
“We support the mayor’s decision in closing gang dolly as the red light district in Surabaya,” he said.
Furthermore, the man who is often called Mr. RT stated that his primary purpose is to eliminate hidden prostitution that still existed in his area. If there are residents who are only able to work like that (prostitution, red), they firmly provide direction and action.
