UNAIR NEWS – In addition to data science discipline, the image science discipline also gains popularity. Image science is a multidisciplinary field related to the creation, collection, copying, analysis, modification, and visualization of images, including imagery things that cannot be detected by the human eye.

As a developing field, image science includes research from physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, computer vision, computer science, and perception psychology.

Based on the Computer Society’s IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Python is a very popular programming language today for job markets, application developers, or for research. The Python programming language is easy to learn, and offers clear and well-structured coding, making Python quite powerful for web applications, desktops, GUI-based desktop applications, machine learning, data science and network servers.

With experts in the field of image science and image processing, Faculty of Information Sciences & Engineering (FISE) Management & Science University (MSU) Malaysia held a short course on February 7-8, 2020 with 17 students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) and also MSU students in FISE MSU.

Army Justitia, S.Kom., M. Kom., as the supervisor said that the first day’s was about the basic lesson on image processing. The participants were provided with basic image processing such as theories about images, color theories on images (RGB, HSV, gray, binner), noise removal in images using Gaussian blurring method, edge detection, contour detection, morphological operators, and other materials.

“The short course on the first day is divided into two sessions, the provision of material and exercise. The output of the short course on the first day was to make participants able to create source code from Python for contour detection and label the image,” she continued.

The second day, she continued, was about basic lesson on video tracking and GUI so participants can create a simple application for video tracking using GUI design.

“Student responses to the Python in image processing short course are very good. All students, both Information Systems, Chemistry, and Statistics students, were very enthusiastic and followed well, ” she concluded. (*)
