“Semen analysis is an examination of the quantity and quality of sperm cells and seminal plasma. The quantity and quality of sperm cells reflect the function of the testes and the male reproductive tract while the seminal plasma reflects the function of the additional glands and male reproductive tract,” said dr. Agus.
The doctor who teaches at the Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Andrology Specialist Medical Education Program said that there are several benefits from a semen examination.
“There are many benefits that can be obtained if someone checks his semen. Besides being able to predict fertility, a semen analysis can predict sexual dysfunction, “explained dr. Agus.
He also said that the procedure is not invasive and the examiner can find out about sexual dysfunction, which results in a decrease in the quality of the semen. So it can predict the man’s fertility.
When he was asked about the examination equipment, dr. Agus said that there is a modern tool that makes it easy for us as an andrologist to analyze the semen, such as FK Andrology Specialist Medical Education Program’s found in the andrology clinic Dr Soetomo General Hospital.
“There is a Computer Assisted Sperm Analyzer (CASA) that makes it easier for us to examine semen. With CASA, we only put liquid semen into the device, then a microscopic image of the spermatozoa will appear on the monitor with indicators of the examination, “said dr. Agus.
However, amid technological developments in the health sector, dr. Agus added that there is still an examination method that is used as a gold standard. The method is a manual inspection method with a microscope.
“The gold standard of semen analysis is by checking it manually with a microscope and guidance from the 5th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) book,” he stated.
At the end of the interview, dr. Agus shared tips on how to get excellent quality semen. “A healthy lifestyle by keeping food intake through a balanced diet, routine exercise every day and avoiding stress is a step that can be done to get good quality semen,” he concluded. (*)
