UNAIR NEWS – Master of Management (MM) Force 51AP Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held a show of Ludruk Goes Millenials: “Aladdin Negeri 1001 Malam in Surabaya” on Sunday, April 28. The collaboration between MM UNAIR and Sinar Nusantara Cultural Festival Studio took place at Fadjar Notonagoro Hall, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNAIR.
Uniquely, ludruk usually related with traditional folklore. This time, the performance was made with new style by combining the concept of film and ludruk in a performance. Before they showe their skills, the audience watched short film that related to the storyline.
The show directed by Dr. Gancar along with East Java artists, Meimura brought one of the stories in 1001 nights, Aladdin and magic lights. Moreover, the players use Javanese language with Middle Eastern costume.
The world in one fingertip
The story started from Aladdin who accidentally found an ancient lamp in the middle of desert. Out of curiosity, he took the lamp home and showed it to his friends. When he rubbed the lamp, suddenly appeared one genie that have been trapped for hundreds of years in the lamp.
As an expression of gratitude, the genie gave an opportunity to Aladdin to request something. Aladdin then asked genie to make Jasmine to fall in love with him then his request was granted by genie.
But apparently, this was known by Jafar Suthanos, a wealthy man who hate Aladdin. Jafar then tried to grab Aladdin’s magic lamp and asked the genie to make Jasmine falling in love with him.
After going through a fierce battle, Jafar managed to grab the magic lamp and Jasmine belonged to him. Realizing his mistake, Aladdin then met his uncle and asked for help. After that, Aladdin saved Jasmine from Jafar’s magic.
Instant and Easy Way
The story is nothing but a representation of today’s young generation condition. Where all needs are easily fulfilled because of technology. Thus, young generation prefer the easiest way to realize their desires.
As part of the younger generation, Abi hopes in the future ludruk can maintain its existence in Indonesia.
“We understand ludruk as Surabaya’s native culture should be preserved. I hope in the futur, there will be more ludruk events.” he concluded.
In addition, the event also invited Cak Kartolo as a guest star. (*)
