UNAIR NEWS – Various efforts continue to be made to maintain the synergy between two countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, through the involvement of important elements in the community.

The academic community also has a big contribution to create a conducive climate, especially in the education sector. It was reflected in the collaboration between the Universitas Airlangga International Relations Program and Malaysia’s Zainal Abidin (Unisza) University which has been established since 2016.

On this occasion, the collaboration led to The 5 th Indonesia-Malaysia Student’s Seminar on International Relations on Saturday, March 23, 2019. It was carried out in Adi Sukadana Room, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNAIR.

“Although it has been held for five times, we do not always host the event. We take turns with Unisza. For the first, third and fifth events we were the host. For the second and fourth occasion, they hosted it, “explained Demas Nauvarian as the event division coordinator.

“There is something different, however, when we host it, we do not involve participants from UNAIR and Unisza, but it is also opened for other universities through call for paper which was then attended by Gadjah Mada University and the University of Indonesia, “he added.

This year the International Relations UNAIR Department chose The Role of Identity in Politics and Policy-Making as the big theme. Because, identity becomes a dominating phenomenon in global contemporary politics and influences both state and non-state apparatuses in an international relationship.

The discussion is divided into three sub-themes. First, Identity and Nationhood by Shofwan Al-Banna Choiruzzad, S.Sos., MA, Ph.D. from University of Indonesia, second, Identity and Election by Suyatno Ladiqi, Ph.D. from Unisza and third, Identity and Economic Development by Dr. Phil. Siti Rokhmawati Susanto, S.IP., MIR. from UNAIR.

After carrying out the discussion, the event continued with Paper Presentation and Awarding Ceremony session. The seminar was closed with a reception directly from Surabaya City Government in Gala Dinner and Cultural Night in Taman Surya.

“We are very pleased, that on this occasion we can receive around fifty to one hundred papers from all students in Indonesia and Malaysia. In fact, enthusiasm shown from high school students even though we haven’t opened it yet,” said the 2017 International Relations student.

With this event, participants are expected to develop and practice science in the field of international relations. Not only in theory, but also in language skills to authorship. In addition, the event can be an intellectual forum on a broad scale to share knowledge on international issues. (*)
