Using Social Media to Promote Regional Tourism

UNAIR NEWS – Towards quality tourism development, UNAIR D3 Tourism Program held a working meeting for DWP IV East Java region through a seminar on “World Class Indonesia Tourism.” The event took place at Surabaya Youth Hostel on February, 16 2019.

Dr. Sri Endah Nurhidayati, S.Sos, M.Si, as speaker said the number of youth currently reaches 60% of Indonesia total population. These young people have an important role in developing tourism because 80% of them are active as social media users.

This potential seen by Indonesian Ministry of Tourism in using social media as media for tourism promotion. The increasing technology and social media user to promote local tourism spread rapidly in the internet.

Thus, there are a lot of new tourist spots wants to be viral on social media with the aim to get people’s attention through internet marketing strategy. Endah continued, with the presence of youth action on social media, our tourism potential can heard throughout the country. One of them is Jeddih hill tour located in Bangkalan, Madura.

“Remember, social media is one of information centers in digital era.” said Endah.

“From social media, the image of Indonesian tourism depends on the information published in internet. We will determine the positive or negative influence for ourselves, “he added.

Endah emphasized that posting on social media can also cause a bad images in social situation. For example, a landslide incident in Malang. Social media users prioritize a sense of empathy for Malang by writing #savemalang hashtag. Thus, there was a drastic reduction visitors in there, even though Malang’s situation was not as bad as it looks in the public.

“Be smart in sorting information before displaying something on social media. Your information will be consumed directly by the world, “Endah added.

“The face of Indonesia comes from your fingers in sorting information,” she added (*).
