UNAIR NEWS – Student Executive Board of Faculty of Economics and Business (BEM FEB) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is conducting another social action in a series of 2020 Economic Week events. This time BEM FEB is conducting a program called Sumbang Singgah (Contribute and Visit) to the neighborhood of Mulyorejo (RW3) Surabaya.
Maulana Azhim Fikri as Head of E-Week revealed that the selected location for the activity was adjusted to the objective of “Social Action” environmental activity. The purpose of this program was to implement hydroponic planting in Surabaya urban community.
“Finally we decided the target location for this activity was the areas or communities in the city of Surabaya which had not implemented hydroponics at all, so RW 3 Mulyorejo was chosen,” he explained.
In carrying out these educational activities, BEM FEB was assisted by the Poristy Hidroponic Foundation, Surabaya. The student executive board collaborates with this foundation because the objectives of their environmental activities are in line with the vision of Poristy Hidroponic Foundation, promoting hydroponics in Surabaya City.
With this hydroponic planting activity, Azhim hoped that it can build enthusiasm and awareness of Surabaya residents, especially residents of Mulyorejo RW 3, to implement the hydroponic program. This hydroponic program is an effort to conserve and green the environment as well as overcome the air pollution issue.
“It is based on our observation, UNAIR FEB students see the condition of the city of Surabaya which is crowded and densely populated. So hydroponics is also expected to be a planting solution due to limited lands, “he explained.
Azhim added that in addition to these objectives, the residents are expected to benefit from the results of hydroponic cultivation in the form of vegetables. Vegetable plants that can be consumed alone or traded.
“Indirectly, this hydroponic program can support the economy of the community,” he said.
In the end, Azhim hoped that the hydroponic planting program can be carried out by residents consistently. If the program can run sustainably, the local residents can gain the benefits of hydroponic planting.
“We also hope that in the future there will be further assistance or coaching by UNAIR FEB students in ” Social Action “next year so this program can run well and as expected,” he concluded. (*)
