UNAIR NEWS – Alvredo Satriawan Singgih, a student of Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), has made an achievement for the alma mater. He won the first place in the international chess championship, the Open Chess International Championship on November 23-24, 2019, at Monash University Malaysia.
Alvredo or Aldo won first place in the Blitz category. He managed to be victorious from 60 other participants from China, Bangladesh, Germany, the Philippines and Malaysia.
“Alhamdulillah, this is a great achievement as well as a new experience for me. Even though I felt inferior at first during the tournament, “he said.
The 2018 Accounting Program student admitted that he was pessimistic at first. Aldo said, the competition was followed by some of Fide Masters from several countries such as the Philippines and Malaysia. “The opponent is strong because participants are not only students, but also from general public. So, any age can participate, “he said.
He has done a lot to make the achievement. Previously, Aldo was asked several times to be a university representative, even representing the region in some chess competitions. “The preparations was long before the competition. I do practice regularly, sometimes with friends or play online. Every night before going to bed I play five games at Lichess, “he said.
To UNAIR NEWS team, Aldo revealed that there were some interesting things that happened during the tournament. In the 7th round, he continued, Aldo played against his own friend who was also from Indonesia. “It’s funny to me, because my friend is my training partner since childhood. Uh, it turns out that this time it was really confronted in an official game. But, we are still serious about competing and fighting for the name of Indonesia, “he recalled.
He hopes he could participate in other International Chess Championship in the future. Aldo admitted that chess is a hobby that has been a part of him since childhood. “Sometimes chess players are identical with quiet people and geniuses. I like reading, sometimes quiet, but if you already know me, you will realize otherwise,” he said, then laughed. (*)
