UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga’s Student Executive Board (BEM) through the Ministry of Social and Political Affairs (Sospol) held a discussion called Airlangga Hari Kartini. The discussion on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, was held as a form of commemoration of Kartini’s Day. The topic was ‘Reflections on Kartini’s Day: Women’s Steps amid a Pandemic and Digital’.

The Ministry of Social and Political Sciences presented three speakers. First, Prof. Dr. Emy Susanti, Dra., MA Head of Gender Studies Center UNAIR as well as UNAIR Professor of Sociology. Second, Luthfia Anindya Yuwono, Chair of the Gender Equality Anti-Discrimination Commission BEM UNAIR. Third, Elni Nainggolan, Chair of Student Gender Study Circle.

Prof. Emy as the first speaker said that the Covid-19 pandemic has deepened pre-existing gender inequalities and injustice. Women are the ones with most sacrifices. Based on the research she conducted on campus, it was found that in the digital era women obtained information about Covid-19 through social media, nuclear family, relatives, and college friends.

“Women in achieving gender equality, which are equality and justice in social roles, must enter gender mainstreaming education,” said Prof. Emy.

According to Prof. Emy, there are three steps for gender mainstreaming education. First, deconstruction, it is an individual awareness that a woman has potential and capability. The second is reconstruction or awareness that can be done formally and practically, by attending lectures or training and social activities. And the third is reproduction, instilling an equal and fair gender ideology between women and men.

Technology for Gender Equality Campaigns

Furthermore, Luthfia as the second speaker added what women can do in the pandemic and digitalization era. According to her, women can take advantage of technological advances to campaign for gender equality on social media. Women can also create a support circle among women.

“Women often push each other, but now it is time for women to support each other in order to achieve gender equality,” she said.

Meanwhile, Elni as the third speaker talked about how to become a woman leader in today’s digital era. There are several steps that women can take to achieve their goals as leaders. First, find a problem or anxiety then speak up on social media or organizations through discussions. Second, build up networks to start a collective strategic agenda.

“To become a female leader and provide real change, three things must be implemented, they are having a vision, building personality to build influence, and consistency,” she added.
