UNAIR NEWS – Education in Indonesia is considered ready to face global competition. The breakthrough and innovation continue to be encouraged in the academic environment of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). One of them is through lecturers’ research and findings presented internationally.

UNAIR Academic Senate has sent some delegates consisting of Prof. Dr. Joewono Soeroso, dr., SP.PD (Chair of the Academic Senate), Iman Prihandono, SH., MH., LL.M., Ph.D (Secretary of Academic Senate), Diah Ariani Arimbi, Ph.D (Dean of FIB), Dr. Santi Martini, dr (Vice Dean I of FKM), Dr. Puji Karyanto, SS., M.Hum (Vice Dean I of FIB), Dr. Endang Dewi Masithah, Ir., MP, (Vice Dean I of FPK), Arief Bakhtiar, dr (Member of Commission III Academic Senate).

The delegates attended the 2019 Association of Southeast Asian Association of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) conference. Iman said that the conference was attended by universities around the world and ASAIHL members to discuss methods of learning in higher education and it was themed: Reconfiguring Universities for the Future. It was held in Manila, Phillippines on July 25-27, 2019.

“From UNAIR delegates, there were three members of Academic Senate who presented their papers at the panel session and one person was honored by presenting his work in the Country Report representing Indonesia because the theme of the paper was very much in accordance with the theme of the conference,” he said.

Iman also said that Indonesia in Country Report session was represented by Diah Ariani Arimbi, Ph.D who presented her paper on the importance of liberal arts in the application of learning in tertiary institutions as Industrial Revolition 4.0 is focused more on the use of technology. This industrial era 4.0 should also touch the human aspect so the existence of art and culture does not lose its roots even though all aspects are digital.

Meanwhile, Iman Prihandono also presented his research on Interdiciplinary Teaching in Law: A Study of Indonesian Law School. Based on his research, there are 25 percent of courses from 18 Law Schools in Indonesia adopting elements of industrial era 4.0. It is still very low in ASEAN countries which have now reached 45 percent of the total number of courses. So it could be a correction and evaluation with universities throughout Indonesia.

“I hope that the Indonesian Faculty of Law, especially UNAIR, can apply the interdisciplinary concept. It means that the discussion of legal issues today does not stand alone, but interdisciplinary. For example, politics, economics, social and culture, even health, pharmacy, negotiation aspects, and innovation, “he said.

It is time for UNAIR to apply more interdisciplinary methods to the learning process. Iman hoped that the Faculty of Law of UNAIR can become a pioneer of educational methods in Indonesia, especially eastern Indonesia. UNAIR Faculty of Law is ranked third after Universitas Indonesia and Padjadjaran University for law courses based on industrial era 4.0.

Furthermore, by attending the conference, UNAIR was able to learn more about the latest developments in the academic situation in various parts of the world. Hopefully, there will be a lot of delegates from UNAIR especially the Academic Senate attending the event to show the universities in the world that UNAIR plays an active role in academic development, especially the curriculum.
