UNAIR NEWS- The availability of dental health workers in Indonesia has not been able to answer the challenges of existing dental problems. One of the challenges according to R. Darmawan Setijanto, Dr. drg., M.Kes as Dean of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is a matter of distribution because there are so many special pieces of equipment and medical needs that are only available in Sumatra, Java, and Bali. So that the eastern part of Indonesia still lacks equipments and dentists.

An effort that must be made to meet that challenge is the mastery of technology in the 4.0 industrial revolution era. Drg Darmawan stated that mastery of technology is necessary as a strategy to prevent tooth decay in eastern Indonesia. He asked all dentists in Indonesia, especially FKG UNAIR alumni to spread knowledge about dental health through counseling and socialization conducted through social media.

“If technology and doctors cannot be brought to the east, tooth decay must be prevented so that teeth are healthy and they do not need equipment difficult to obtain. Dentists must be able to take advantage of the sophisticated internet and technology in the present era by teaching them how to brush their teeth well, how to look after their teeth to stay healthy and other knowledge through blogs, Instagram, and various social media, “he explained.

Drg Darmawan also explained that Indonesia needs to learn from China, which currently has advanced robotic technology capable of dental implants. He also added that Indonesian dentists need not fear their profession being displaced by technological advancements in the industrial era.

“The technology will help our work to improve dental and oral health, not to replace the position of a dentist. Doctors still make a diagnosis of the patient, but in the execution, later on, it can be done by robots which of course are still in human control too, “he explained.

As one of the higher education institutions providing a dental medicine program, UNAIR has sought to produce high-quality graduates. The Dean of FKG UNAIR stated that the university is trying to provide insight into the world of dental medicine abroad. By seeing the progress of it in China, Europe, Japan, and various other countries, he hoped that it could improve the learning activities of all students so that they do not feel proud of Indonesian dental medicine has achieved.

“In addition to improving the quality of dentists through students, UNAIR also tries to facilitate FKG lecturers and staff through collaborative research with other countries,” he concluded.
