UNAIR NEWS – Wonokromo is one of the regions with high dengue cases in Surabaya. The dense population and ineffective case report initiated Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) to conduct Inter Professional Education (IPE) Community Service program for Extraordinary Events (KLB). It held a counseling and prevention event of dengue fever in Wonokromo.

The counseling activity was held on Friday, July 5, 2019, in RW 4 Hall, Wonokromo Village, Wonokromo Sub-district, Surabaya. The location was based on the discovery of the last dengue fever case, in RW 4, Wonokromo. There were 75 Jumantik cadres (larva monitoring officers) RW 4, village heads, and representatives of teenager community.

Archie Arman Dwiyatna, Head of KKN IPE KLB UNAIR, said that the counseling provided an important value Jumantik as the frontline in managing dengue epidemics. Moreover, it is intended to introduce dengue mosquitoes as well as dengue prevention methods that have never been done by Jumantik cadres.

“Jumantik activities have been active, but the case report system is not optimal. So, from the health center the health office regulations are in line. That is, only the dengue fever (DBD) is reported (thrombocyte <100,000), while the DB (thrombocyte 100,000 – 150,0000) is not reported. There is a safe impression, there is no epidemic, even though people with thrombocyte <150,000 are actually a lot, “he said.

“So, there are actually still a lot of people who are not reporting. In fact, there are quite many patients, “Archie stated.

In the counseling program, KKN IPE KLB UNAIR students also taught how to make simple mosquito nests and the introduction of 10 types of plants that could repel mosquitoes. For the effectiveness of the practice of making simple mosquito nests, a small group FGD (focus group discussion) model was formed.

The materials are easy to get such as used bottle, yeast, sugar, hot water, duct tape, black plastic bags, scissors and it is also easily done by the residents. The participants showed great enthusiasm. It is a new method introduced to them (*)
