UNAIR NEWS – Recently, the soap opera, Ikatan Cinta, which was broadcast on a TV station, has received a lot of attention from the public. The reason is, people think that this soap opera has an interesting and different storyline from other soap operas. The soap opera managed to break records of the highest rating.

In this regard, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Media expert, Prof. Dra. Rachmah Ida M.Comms., Ph.D., revealed that there are three reasons why this soap opera is very popular with the public. According to the professor of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), the existence of soap operas airing on television is an alternative entertainment for the community amid a pandemic that is still not over.

“People feel stressed by news about Covid-19 or feel tired and depressed due to Covid-19, so people run away (find escape, ed) by watching entertainment shows on television,” she explained on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

The second reason, it is favored by the public, added Prof. Ida, because many other shows on television are monotonous. The third reason is that the presence of soap operas can build fantasies (dreams, ed) for people who are currently feeling stress due to the pandemic.

Furthermore, Prof. Ida explained that when discussing audience in the context of media studies, they are considered as active audience in translating the meaning of media themselves (soap opera contents, ed). Therefore, there will only be one or two people who are affected by watching soap operas and other television shows.

“Audiences are affected after watching soap operas because they feel what is broadcast is similar to their stories, but it is possible that the number of viewers who can be affected is very limited,” she explained.

Prof. Ida hoped that in the future, television programs will be able to empower the community, enlighten the public and provide healthy entertainment.

At the end, Prof. Ida advised the public to be wise viewers because what is in soap operas is only fiction and not reality. Moreover, the audience must be smart and understand that watching soap operas is only for entertainment.

“Be a wise audience, an audience who knows that the soap opera is just a fantasy. The producer actually gave a disclaimer to the public at the start of the show. Apart from that, people must also be smart in watching soap operas, ” she concluded. (*)
