UNAIR NEWS- The high transmission of Covid-19 in Indonesia did not prevent students from UNAIR’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) from carrying out social activities. FPK UNAIR’s Social and Learning Activity with Morality for Nation (SALMON) committee completed the Social Project 2.0 ‘Beach Clean Up’ action on the coast of Kenjeran, Surabaya on Saturday morning, August 21, 2021. Furthermore, a few days earlier, on August 14, 2021, they had also succeeded in sharing knowledge about the potential in underdeveloped areas and waste management and training the creativity of coastal children in the Sukolilo area, Bulak sub-district, Surabaya.
Interviewed by UNAIR NEWS, Aria Anggi, as the head of the committee, stated that Social Project 2.0 was supported by River Warrior, an ecological well-being community, and participants of Ruang Mengabdi (one of the previous SALMON programs).
“There is a beach clean-up activity as a form of implementing the knowledge gained from the Ruang Mengabdi SALMON,” explained Anggi.
All participants double-up their masks and have been vaccinated. Moreover, Anggi only invited a few members. The goal is to reduce crowd levels and limit interactions during the activities. This way, it can minimize the possibility of transmission of the Covid-19.
Cleaning the beach during the Covid-19 pandemic is sufficient to increase public awareness and concern for environmental cleanliness. There was great enthusiasm from the participants to play their role as a driving force in protecting the environment.
“Seeing the enthusiasm of the committee taking part in this activity, it proves that they can be pioneers in the action of protecting environmental ecosystems,” said Anggi.
After implementing SALMON Social Project agenda, Anggi hoped that the activity could have a positive impact on the participants and surrounding community. She also hoped that the event of sharing knowledge and caring for the environment could inspire other people and carry out innovative and sustainable activities in serving the community in the future.
“Hopefully, this action that we have carried out can motivate and inspire other students to care about the environment. In the future, hopefully, there will be innovative and sustainable activities within the scope of community service,” concluded Anggi.
