UNAIR NEWS – As a form of collaboration between Universitas Airlangga and the School of Nursing Science, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Malaysia, the Faculty of Nursing Universitas Airlangga (FKp UNAIR) held a guest lecture by Ong Swee Leong, PhD. The guest lecture held via Zoom Meeting discussed the Models and Standards of Perioperative Service in Innovation-based Nursing.

The guest lecture held on Friday, May 28, 2021, was attended by 36 students from Master’s and Doctoral Nursing study programs. The speaker explained that perioperative care is a term used to describe the diversity of nursing functions related to the patient’s surgical experience. Healthcare applications are changing rapidly, so there is a need for a perioperative service in innovation-based nursing.

“Perioperative nursing is practised in a technologically advanced and fast-paced environment, not only technical, but it also requires high skills and knowledge in caring for patients before, during, and after surgery,” she said.

In her opinion, the importance of scientific knowledge today has increased, and health care applications are changing rapidly. Nursing practice planning, delivery and evaluation of innovative strategies are some key factors that directly affect service quality.

“Innovation is the most important tool to improve the quality of life through quality improvement of nursing care and its sustainability,” she said.

Furthermore, she said that there are two types of innovation. The first is product innovation which is the creation and introduction of new and better goods or services. Then, the second is a process innovation which is the implementation of new ways to increase production or delivery methods significantly.

“Why is innovation so important? As maintenance and improvement of service and health care quality, responding to growing demands in IT health services, overcoming global workforce shortages, and developing clinical nursing specialization, “ she said.

Nursing education must innovate and collaborate to focus on the unique role of perioperative nursing, both within nursing and the related disciplines of surgery and anaesthesia, in promoting safe and high-quality care.

“There are three areas of innovation in nursing, education, clinical, and research. One example is in clinical fields such as the use of robots, 3D organ printing, 4D-holographic and virtual keyboards which will soon become a reality in the perioperative environment,” she said.

Perioperative nursing innovation is the key to improvement and advancement in healthcare systems around the world, and perioperative nurses can become experts in technology and care in all three phases of the surgical experience.

“Who knows, maybe you all have your innovative ideas. As nurses today and tomorrow, each of us have the opportunity to pioneer change,” she concluded.

UNAIR, as the best university  in Indonesia, encourages the entire academic community to have global insight and competitiveness. (*)
