UNAIR NEWS – Carita bantala or story about earth is a presentation from Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) specialized in health promotion and behavioral science (PKIP) 2019. Raising less plastic more life theme, the event was held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at BG Junction.

Mochamad Azhari Mardhani or Dhani, head of the committee from the event explained that the theme was chosen due to committee’s anxiety about the amount of plastic waste and its impact on the environment and living things.

“In this activity, we try to introduce to the general public especially high school students on how to cope with plastic waste,” explained Dhani.

There was a talk show, poetry reading, photo contests, and mini games. The committee also invited several environmental communities in Surabaya such as zero rubbish community and river caring community to be introduced to the participants.

By knowing the community, a sense of concern and desire from the participants is expected to gather more information regarding environmental issues and how to overcome them. Moreover, the committee also hoped that they will be moved to join the community.

Meanwhile, there were three speakers in the talk show, Titik Sugiarti as chairman of the garbage bank of Sidotopo village, Surabaya, Hania Ismail as a representative from the zero waste community, Surabaya, and Muhammad Abdel Rafi, UNAIR student, winner of 2014 Toyota Eco Youth.

In the future, Dhani hoped more and more people will be aware of reducing plastic waste and starting to implement a zero waste lifestyle, such as starting to use a non-plastic straw, stainless steel straw, or bringing our own totebag when we go shopping.

“We can’t remove plastic. But we can reduce the use of plastic or process plastic waste into an innovation, ” said Dhani.

The activity of Carita Bantala as a form of health promotion is one of the tasks of the media development course. Pulung Siswantara, S.KM., M.Kes, the person in charge of the course explained that in the course of media development, students are required to hold a health promotion program related to the problems in society.

“When theory only comes from the class, it won’t become anything. Why don’t we use the knowledge, we let them make a very good campaign so that people can change and bring positive impacts to the community, ” explained Pulung.
