UNAIR NEWS – Airlangga Disease Prevention and Research Center – One Health Collaborating Center (ADPRC-OHCC) is one of the platforms at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), which was formed by Indonesia One Health University Network (INDOHUN) in September 2017. ADPRC-OHCC has the vision to develop human resources (students and academics, ed) through education, research, and community service activities by applying One Health and its sustainability.

ADPRC-OHCC successfully held a webinar entitled “One Health and Multidisciplinary Collaboration” on Wednesday, August 19. The event discussed One Health concept and moderated by Gavrila Amadea., DVM, the webinar featured three speakers consisting of Dr. Agnes Theresia Soelih Estoepangestie, drh, Dr. Musthofa Helmi Effendi, drh., DATPH, and Dr. Prihartini Widiyanti, drg., M.Kes.

The concept of One Health is not something new, and this idea was created several years ago. The formulation of its approach was improved and more attractive than before.

“One Health created a long time ago and is not something new, but the concept arranged several years ago,” said Dr. Agnes via zoom meeting.

The concept One Health can be defined as a collaborative effort of various disciplines working at local, national, and global levels to achieve optimal health for humans, animals, and the environment. Previously, the concept of One Health was better known as One Medicine.

Several scientists who contributed to developing the concept of One Health include Hippocrates, Edward Jenner, Rudolf Virchow, William Osler, Theobald Smith, Calvin W. Schwabe, and others. Dr. Agnes explained that Calvin W. Schwabe had an essential role in finding the concept of One Medicine-One Health.

In everyday life, the concept of One Health can be described as a family consisting of father, mother, and child, where there are different roles in the family, but they support one another. At the end of her presentation, Dr. Agnes said that in the future, there would be more problems arise, no one can predict when the problem will come. Hence, the collaboration of various parties to solve the problem with One Health concept is needed. (*)
