UNAIR NEWS – An alumna of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Yuliati Umrah, is included in the list of 80 World Strategic Leaders. Her name represents Indonesia in line with the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announcement.

Yuliati has been widely known as an Indonesian activist for gender equality and the protection and empowerment of children. Her struggle led to an opportunity to be a member of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) elected by the United States Government.

“The United States government elects Embassies, while Consulates Control selects figures who are considered as leaders or alternative leaders in communities and government institutions. I participated in this program (IVLP, ed) in 2016 from February to April,” she explained in an interview on November 17, 2021.

Yuliati herself is often called the mother of street children. She obtained it for some reasons.

Initially, in 1998, Yuliati and four other FISIP students founded a social organization called the Arek Lintang (Alit) Foundation in Surabaya. After 23 years, Alit now has eight branch offices in eight regencies/cities in three provinces.

Yuliati said that Alit is currently accompanying more than 1,400 children. However, there have been more than 10,000 children in total since 1998.

“Many people throughout Indonesia have accessed our programs. Even some donor agencies and international institutions also access some of the modules we created,” she added.

One of the newest programs that Yuliati initiated is “Dewa Dewi Rama Daya” which stands for child-friendly and cultural agritourism and industrial tourism villages.

In addition to supporting Presidential Regulation Number 80 of 2019 concerning Economic Recovery, she explained that the program also echoes that the tourism industry must remain child-friendly. The program, she continued, has been applied in 12 villages in 3 provinces.

With her hard work, she gradually received a series of awards. One of them was the title of Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in 2012. Yuliati has also been lined up as one of the two best Indonesian IVLP alumni in 2020.

“I also contributed two articles in the formulation of the International Child Protection Law initiated by Johns Hopkins University in the United States in 2005 and 2010, especially regarding the protection of children from domestic workers,” she said.

The 25th anniversary of Yuliati’s struggle with Alit will be in 2023. She hoped to complete her duties as Executive Director and retire soon. However, she wanted to continue developing herself in the world of education. (*)
