UNAIR NEWS – Airlangga Dental Hospital (RSGM) has officially become the fourth RSGM in Indonesia to be accredited as the Dental and Oral Teaching Hospital (RSGM Pendidikan).  The accreditation was given by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia on September 7, 2021.

This accreditation is inseparable from UNAIR’s passion to always strive to develop and improve quality in various aspects on campus. Prof. Coen Pramono Drg. SU Sp. Bm (K), FICS, as the Director of RSGM UNAIR, said that the process of getting achievements as RSGM Pendidikan was not easy. RSGM UNAIR had to go through a long process because previously, RSGM UNAIR was only in the form of an ordinary clinic attached to the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) UNAIR.

“This ordinary clinic then metamorphosed into an RSGM. However, since there are new regulations, this RSGM turns into a Teaching Hospital,” he said.

In the initial process, when it was still a Dental Medicine Center, Prof. Coen revealed that it had to be changed into a hospital because the hospital provided services for the public. According to him, the most essential thing in service is patient safety from dangers such as complications.

“The process was not kidding because it is related to saving people. By becoming a hospital, patient safety can be handled more quickly,” he continued.

The journey of RSGM metamorphosis has been challenging because when Prof. Coen became a director for the first time about six years ago, RSGM had not yet received an operational permit. The permit is related to the regulations of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) regarding special hospitals, including the RSGM.

“After obtaining the operational permit, the hospital can be recognized and run well if it is accredited,” he explained.

The accreditation process was very long because several things needed to be observed so that RSGM UNAIR could become worthy as a Special Hospital. Prof. Coen is grateful that RSGM UNAIR got five stars in the accreditation.

“This is because we carry out operations following the provisions of the Ministry of Health. RSGM UNAIR has outpatient care, inpatient care, operating rooms, waste management, and all the things required by a Special Hospital,” he explained.

RSGM UNAIR needs to be qualified as a Teaching Hospital because apart from serving patients, it is also used as an undergraduate to specialist teaching hospital in FKG UNAIR.

“The accreditation of this Teaching Hospital is important to provide education, services, and research at FKG UNAIR,” he added.

Dental specialist students of FKG UNAIR must have a medical permit as a specialty. Meanwhile, the medical permit cannot be issued if it is not from a Teaching Hospital.

“What makes us proud is that we have gone through various stages, starting from the operational permit for accreditation up to the last one becoming the RSGM Pendidikan,” he said.

In the future, RSGM UNAIR will make internal improvements. RSGM UNAIR wants to collaborate with the Social Security Administration Agency (BPJS) and/or other insurance institutions to support the sustainability of RSGM UNAIR. During the pandemic, it is certainly not easy to find dental patients. The risk of spreading through the mouth is very high, so that it becomes an obstacle for dentists at the RSGM.

“RSGM UNAIR provides a safe place for patients. We carry out the treatment in a negative pressure room for Covid-19 patients, so it is safe for doctors and patients,” he concluded.

Besides RSGM UNAIR, other Dental Hospitals that received similar accreditation are RSGM Universitas Hasanuddin, RSGM Universitas Trisakti. (*)
