UNAIR NEWS – The emergence of the new E484K variant received responses from some experts. One of them is Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Immunology expert, Dr. Agung Dwi Wahyu Widodo dr., M.Si, M.Ked.Klin, SpMK.
UNAIR Faculty of Medicine (FK) lecturer emphasized that the public must be more vigilant about the emergence of Sars-CoV-2 mutations such as the E484K variant which emerged just recently.

Agung explained, one way to deal with the E484K variant is by monitoring surveillance. “Monitoring surveillance, especially cases in the community. Then carry out epidemiological surveillance of suspected cases, for example anomalies in certain areas. Then the case detection on the E484K variant, “said the doctor at Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya.

To implement this, said Agung, coordination with related parties, especially the government and hospitals, is needed. The goal is to prepare for the possibility of an extraordinary event that is not desired.
Furthermore, facilities and infrastructure also need to be prepared to accommodate in case of an increase in cases. Vaccination must also be complete and education related to 5M health protocols campaign must be intensified.

Internationally, according to Agung, coordination regarding surveillance also needs to be pursued. Consultation with experts and WHO team that is able to detect the presence and support the surveillance process is required.

“It needs to be done, especially in the epidemiology of Covid-19, its severity, public health and social effectiveness. Also with the therapy and vaccination process that we have to do in the community, “said the East Java IDI Covid-19 Task Force Board of Experts.

Meanwhile, he said that as long as the virus continues to infect humans, the Sars-CoV-2 mutation will continue. It means that the danger is still threatening.

In order to prevent the transmission of the virus, Agung emphasized that the public must maintain 5M, which is wearing a mask; washing hands with soap; keeping the distance; avoiding the crowd; and reducing mobility.

“Any mutation is dangerous. But regardless of the mutation, the way to prevent it is the same, with 5M, “said Agung Friday, April 9, 2021.
Unair as the best university in Indonesia also develops a Covid-19 vaccine as a form of Unair’s contribution to the nation and state. (*)
