UNAIR NEWS – Good news came from two alumni of Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). They are Nando Reza Pratama and Roy Bagus Kurniawan.

They won silver and bronze medal in the individual award category 2021Siriraj International Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology Competition (SIMPIC). From Saturday to Sunday, March 13-14 , 2021 yesterday. “I didn’t expect it at all, but I am very grateful,” said Roy.

In this online competition, Nando and Roy were not alone. In total there were 12 delegates divided into three teams including Roy and Nando.

Surprisingly, it turned out that all the teams had fought until the final round. However, their struggle must have stopped and ended in the fifth, sixth and seventh places.

“Three teams from UNAIR qualified for the final round. Unfortunately, out of the 10 agreed questions that were tested, the judges only stopped at 7th questions. Even though in the sixth question, Team I was in third place, “explained Roy, disappointed.

According to the delegates, the competition was fierce. There were 80 teams from 12 countries participated in the world-class olympiad. “The typical questions being tested are very detailed and unfamiliar,” said Roy on news.ika-fk-unair.org/ .

SIMPIC is an olympiad in the field of Medical Microbiology which is quite famous in the international realm. The annual olympiad was held by Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, one of the world’s top universities in the field of tropical infection and medicine.

Before the competition, all delegates were selected through a strict faculty selection process. Furthermore, various tests and guidance have also been done.

Being finalists in one of the prestigious international olympiads is an extraordinary achievement. Roy, FK UNAIR 2021 Best Graduate said that it was not easy to reach that position.

“One of the keys to the success of UNAIR teams in this olympiad is maintaining a sense of solidarity and trust with each other,” he concluded. (*)
