UNAIR NEWS – The mutation of SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus in Great Britain have caused various concerns in the community. Many have also questioned the efficacy of the vaccine against the new virus strain called B117.

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Immunology expert, Dr. Agung Dwi Wahyu Widodo dr., M.Si, M.Ked.Klin, SpMK. explained two vaccines circulating in Europe, Moderna and Pfizer, have been tested to be able to neutralize Strain B117. “Antibodies from people who have been vaccinated are taken, then tested with this virus. The result turns out that Strain B117 can be overcome, “he explained to the editorial team on Monday, March 15, 2021.

Agung explained that Moderna and Pfizer vaccine were both originated from viruses circulating in America or Europe. So there’s possibility that they have the same origin.

“So the origin of this vaccine (Moderna and Pfizer, ed) are the same as Strain B117. Because it is the same, there may be similarities so that it can neutralize this virus, “he said.

Meanwhile regarding the Sinovac Vaccine, Agung could not provide clarity. He said, until now there was no data showing the efficacy of the Sinovac vaccine used in Indonesia.

“If we have the Strain, if we test it, maybe we have the data. Until now, we don’t have data on whether Sinovac is able to neutralize this variant, “said the UNAIR Faculty of Medicine (FK) lecturer.

However, he estimates that the Sinovac Vaccine material comes from an older virus in Wuhan. So, it is still not mutated properly.

“Testing needs to be done, between this variant virus (Strain B117, ed) and the vaccination results from Sinovac because until now there has been no information, “he explained.

People should be aware of this strain because data from the UK and the USA show that Strain B117 is more infectious than the previous coronavirus. Agung said, in the USA, Strain B117 was able to double the infection rate in just 10 days.

Until now, Strain B117 has been detected to have spread in 90 countries, including Indonesia. Agung said, in Indonesia this virus was found in four provinces.

Therefore, he suggested an epidemiological surveillance as an effort to control the virus. “Movements from one country to another must be controlled, so there are no imported cases,” he said. (*)
