UNAIR NEWS – Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE) held Study in the US webinar on Monday, March 1, 2021. The webinar was held online using zoom media and YouTube in collaboration with the Indonesian Office of International Affairs (KUI) Forum, Education USA in Surabaya, and Semarang State University (UNNES).

Ambarizky Trinugraheni (Ambar) as an adviser at Education USA Surabaya explained that at least there are five steps need to be taken by prospective students: doing research, financial planning for studies, completing registration applications, making student visas, and preparing for departure.

“The first step is the most important step if you want to apply to study at a university in the United States,” said the alumna of Arizona University.

Research needs to be done to find a university that is suitable for prospective students. Prospective students need to make sure that the university they choose has a program that is suitable for them, or whether the chosen university or program provide scholarships if prospective students need financial assistance.

After getting a list of universities that match the criteria for prospective students, the next step is to plan finance for studies, whether with private funds, scholarships, financial assistance from the workplace or from the government.

“The third step is filling out the registration application,” she continued.

When students register, it is necessary to pay attention to what documents and requirements that must be met. Prospective students need to ascertain what tests must be taken and the minimum score that must be achieved. What documents required could be only a resume and CV or a certain portfolio because each university has different requirements. Prospective students also need to pay attention to registration deadlines so they will not miss it.

According to Ambar, the fourth and fifth steps are the easiest steps because when prospective students pass the selection, they only need to take care of a student visa and prepare to go to the destination university.

There are a variety of scholarships for prospective students who wish to study in the United States such as the US Government-Fulbright Scholarship program consisting of Fulbright and Aminef (www.aminef.or.id), US Government Non-Degree Youth Program with its program Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) (http: // youngsoutheastasianleaders. state.gov), LPDP (www.lpdp.kemenkeu.go.id), and the Organization-East West Center ( www.eastwestcenter.org ).
