UNAIR NEWS – Floods seem to be one of the natural disasters that happens frequently. One area that frequently flooded is Benjeng Subdistrict, Gresik. Recently, floods hit this area again, the overflowing water of Lamong River even covered the roads and went into houses.
This area is a flood prone area which every year always faces the same disaster. The floods that occur also cut off road access so community activities are disrupted.
Students of Nursing Three-year Vocational Program do not remain silent, they held a fundraising. It was a form of students’ concern over the disaster.
Kaldera Yugi as coordinator of the action said that the fundraising was a student initiative. “This action is an initiative of students to help those affected by floods in Benjeng Subdistrict,” he said.
The donation drive which was held for 4 days started on December 13, 2020 to December 16, 2020. In raising funds. The funds collected were used to meet the basic needs of flood victims.
The funds collected were donated in the form of basic commodities. The fund resulted in 8 cartons of instant noodles, 5 cartons of mineral water, and several other staples which were distributed to flood victims.
“We donate the collected support in the form of basic necessities as the victims have difficulty to attain basic commodities if the flood happens,” explained Kaldera.
The donation, which was made on December 17, 2020, is expected to ease the burden on flood victims. “Hopefully the donations we provide can help ease the victims’ burden,” said Kaldera.
However, it did not stop there, Kaldera explained that the second phase of fundraising is carried out from 19 December 2020 to 23 December 2020. “The second phase of fundraising is carried out to help those victims of flood,” concluded Kaldera. (*)
