UNAIR NEWS – In order to motivate students to improve their achievements in the field of Scientific Writing (KTI), Student Association of D3 Program (three year vocational program) Medical Laboratory Engineering (TLM) Faculty of Vocational Studies (FV) UNAIR held an online seminar entitled ‘BIMASAKTI’. The activity was held on Saturday morning, August 15, 2020.

Nurida Alfi Mustafida as the head of student association said that the topic in the seminar was not only about scientific writing, but also English. The reason, continued Nurida, is that students’ great interest in scientific writing should be balanced with excellent English language skills.

“TLM students were very enthusiastic about scientific writing. We have even won several national and international scientific writing competitions, ” she said.

On the first day of the event, UNAIR outstanding student Moh. Wahyu Syafi’ul Mubarok had the opportunity to be a speaker. In the event, Wahyu shared his experiences and achievements in various scientific writing competitions.

According to Wahyu, developing scientific writing skills is very beneficial for students. Apart from being able to implement knowledge and hone critical thinking skills, scientific writing led Wahyu to become UNAIR Outstanding Student.

Wahyu is known to have a myriad of achievements, especially in the field of scientific writing. Throughout 2019 alone, he has won 22 competitions. The student of Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) UNAIR has authored and published 11 books.

He conveyed that a good scientific writing work fulfills at least six things. First, make sure the work is completed. Second, it must be done according to the guidelines. Third, originality in scientific writing is very important. Moreover, scientific writing requires a strong introduction and the results must answer the objectives that were set. Finally, Wahyu said, it is mandatory to double-check the work that has been completed.

Furthermore, Wahyu also revealed that scientific writing and scientific essays are two different things. In fact, he said, the difference is quite substantial. Scientific writing is required to have literature studies, field studies, and laboratory studies, while a scientific essay is a written idea. Scientific writing is composed of five chapters. Meanwhile, a scientific essay is composed of three parts, namely introduction, content, and conclusion. “KTI and scientific essays, although almost similar, are actually different,” he said.

All participants received scientific writing and TOEFL training from the presenters directly. Some participants also presented their works during the seminar. There were 82 participants taking part in the webinar.

Nurida hoped that the event can provide new knowledge and experiences for participants, especially TLM D3 program students. So they are motivated and driven to make achievements, both at the national and international levels.

“Hopefully with this event, fellow students can be even more enthusiastic about participating in various competitions. So it can bring the good reputation of the program and Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Indonesia and abroad, ” she hoped. (*)
