UNAIR NEWS – Learning from home is the safest way for students to avoid transmission of COVID-19 virus in the current pandemic. The family especially parents indeed have an important role in accompanying their children when learning from home. Ramliyanto, SP. MP., Secretary of East Java Provincial Education Office revealed that there are six roles that families can play to support children’s education during the pandemic.

Creating harmony

The first role a family can do for the child is to create a harmonious atmosphere. In an educational webinar event organized by 62nd Community Service Program (KKN) of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Gubeng, Ramliyanto revealed that a harmonious atmosphere could support the good teaching and learning process from home. If the atmosphere in the family is not harmonious, it certainly reduces the child’s learning comfort.

“If the atmosphere at home is not harmonious, the relationship between family members is also not harmonious, how can a child learn at home,” he said.

Choosing education method in family

The second role is to choose what methods are used to educate children in the family environment. Ramliyanto explained the need for discussion and agreement between the two parents to choose method in educating children. With the division of tasks between husband and wife in caring for children, the learning process at home will also run smoothly.

“For example, a husband who helps operating a laptop for his child and a wife who cooks food, it helps the child to feel comfortable studying at home,” he explained.

Giving attention

The third role is that parents must pay attention to their children while studying at home. That way, parents can also know the development of children’s education.

Communicating in democratic manner

The fourth role is to carry out democratic communication in the family environment. Communication is also important so that children’s education can run smoothly.

Appreciating children

The fifth role that can also be done by parents is to give an appreciation to children’s learning outcomes. Ramliyanto said an appreciation is essential. By giving appreciation, it can increase the enthusiasm of children to continue to learn and carry out their duties.

“For example, children get the assignment to draw, no matter what their works must still be appreciated. If it is not appreciated, children may not want to learn anymore, do not want to do other tasks, “he said while presenting the material through Google Meet.

Participating more

The latter role is parents to participate in children’s activities with school. Based on Ramliyanto’s explanation, the East Java Provincial Education Office wants parents to show participation in every children’s activity. Even though both parents have their own activities, they still have to participate to monitor the learning process of their children at home so they can improve their performance.

“I beg with respect as the Education Office representative of East Java Province so families can participate in children’s activities with school, don’t let children be allowed to keep playing with gadgets and monitor their education,” he said.

During the webinar, Ramliyanto also explained that Indonesian education policies during the pandemic prioritized the health and safety of students, educators, education personnel, families and the community. So, it is hoped that all communities will be patient in implementing learning from home because it is important to maintain their own health and safety. (*)
