UNAIR NEWS – The impact of Covid-19 pandemic is not only felt in the health sector but in all aspects of life, including the field of education where all schools apply online learning. It leads to limited opportunities for students to read books, some even complained about material that was difficult to understand and the lack of teaching and learning activities during the pandemic holiday.

As a response, ten students of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in 62nd Community Service Program (KKN) of Pucangan Village, Montong Sub-district, Tuban Regency, East Java, created a reading house. The activity was carried out by the KKN team together with youth community in collaboration with Pucangan Village library utilizing the Village Owned Enterprises (BUMDES) from July 6-20, 2020.

The Reading House does not yet represent the complete function of village library due to the limited quantity and quality of books being collected, the lack of educational toys and the absence of volunteer assisting children during learning.

“By continue to implement the health protocols, the reading house is opened with an independent reading system and the provision of additional material tailored to school subjects,” said Sukma Meylia Widhiastyara as a member of KKN.

Not only providing a reading house for learning to children, the Physics student continued, the reading house is also open to the general public. There are also teaching and learning activities for children carried out by the Community Service Team.

“For the reading house, we divide it in half, there is one in the village near the mountain Dawang Sawang and the village near the village hall, Dusun Krajan. For villages near the mountain, it is very worrying to use musala as a place to teach. We also brought the book, “explained the student from Class 2017.

There is a good response of the community and children are very enthusiastic. It can be seen from the teaching and learning process carried out in the reading house where the mothers accompanying their children to learn.

The reading house is expected to always open to foster literacy early on because at this time many children rarely read books but play gadgets instead. Therefore, the reading house provides facilities for discussion, socializing, and improving reading fondness. (*)
