UNAIR NEWS – Various face-to-face educational activities must be delayed during work from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, including inbound staff activities. However, this condition is certainly not a reason to stop the education activity at UNAIR.

Orthodontics Department of Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga has held international lectures online through DECOTA (video conferencing with Universitas Airlangga) scheme on June 14 and 28. Prof. Shailesh Deshmukh, from India as a guest speaker, explained biomechanics of tooth movement, which includes basic theories to clinical applications.

“DECOTA program facilitates the process of transfer of knowledge for lecturers and students during the current pandemic, which makes it impossible to hold a guest lecture program by conventional international speakers,” said Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Narmada, drg., Sp.Ort (K) as Head of Orthodontics Department in Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga.

DECOTA program is beneficial as a means of sharing knowledge with international speakers who are competent in their fields, according to Prof. Narmada.

Mustaqbal Suharwan, one of Orthodontic Specialist Education Program students, also believes that DECOTA program provides more opportunities for students to gain knowledge from foreign speakers without being limited by distance.

“During this pandemic situation, we have to study from home and use online media because it’s the only effective learning tool at the moment. But in the future when the situation returns to normal, I hope to have a face-to-face lecture so that the quality of FKG UA Orthodontist Specialist Education Program students can compete with other international orthodontists department, “Mustaqbal said.
