UNAIR NEWS – Even though the number of confirmed patients of Covid-19 has continued to increase, the Indonesian government is preparing for a new normal era. In this era the community is expected to carry out activities as usual while applying the health protocol. One sector that is also being prepared to face a new normal era is the education sector.

As a response, dr. Sulis Bayusentono, M. Kes., SpOT (K)., Lecturer in Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) gave an explanation at the online discussion held by the Musculoskeletal Science Community for Medical Students (Meniscus) on Saturday, June 20, 2020. According to him, whatever happens, life must go on, meaning that the community must coexist and participate in controlling the spread of the virus.

“Inevitably life must go on and have to survive in a situation like this. It does not mean reconciling with this virus but live side by side with the current situation and control the virus, “he explained.

In the education sector arrangement, lectures both offline and online can be an option during the new normal era. However, there are some things that will become a new order in conducting lectures offline, started by checking the temperature of students, giving distance from each seats, the implementation of learning using the shift system, and do other health protocols.

Sulis said there were 3 things that must be considered to prepare for a new normal era in education sector. First, Human Resources (HR) both lecturer and student resources. Second, existing facilities. In this case, the relevant faculties certainly have a big role to prepare all supporting facilities such as hand washing facilities, classroom disinfection, and health care facilities. Third, the science of a department. Not all sciences in a particular department can do online learning as a whole.

“If there is a class impossible to do with online learning, facilities and human resources must support the holding of face-to-face learning,” said Sulis.

These three things are the foundation of face-to-face lectures while still adhering to the existing health protocols. “The aim is that health protocols can be obeyed. Of course it depends on the management of the faculty concerned. But when an educational institution experiences limited human resources and facilities, it is better to do the lecture online. Because it is feared to lead to new clusters, “he concluded. (*)
