PPE in high demand, FK aids medical equipment to Dr. Soetomo and UNAIR Hospital

UNAIR NEWS – Support for medical staff in facing Covid-19 continues to come, including from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga. This week, Dean of Medicine, Prof. Dr. dr. Soetojo, Sp.U (K) with Vice Dean II, Prof. Dr. dr. Budi Santoso, Sp.OG (K), visited two hospitals to give their supports.

The first visit was made to the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Dr. Soetomo on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. Prof. Soetojo said, there were some medical equipment handed over by FK UNAIR, 350 hazmat Sritex, 350 face shield, and 80 bottles of hand sanitizer.

“We ordered washable hazmat clothing because it can be washed and used repeatedly for 6-7 times of use. Meanwhile, the face shield and hand sanitizer were made directly by FK UNAIR students assisted by administrative staff. Actually, we want to give a (disinfection) chamber, but it’s still in the making process, “said Prof. Soetojo.

The arrival of UNAIR Faculty of Medicine to RSUD Dr. Soetomo was welcomed by the Director of Professional Education and Research, Prof. Dr. Cita Rosita Sigit Prakoeswa, dr., Sp. KK (K), FINSDV, FAADV. She said they had enough personal protective equipment (PPE), but given the situation that never improved, this aid really helped.

A similar statement was made by Dr. dr. Anang Endaryanto, Sp.A (K) as the Director of Medical Services and Nursing Dr. Soetomo Hospital. The pediatrician said that he felt really helped by some aid from UNAIR Faculty of Medicine.

“At the moment, Dr. Soetomo Hospital is not only a national referral hospital, but also become a Covid-19 referral hospital. In handling this pandemic, there are 36 beds in the special isolation ward which is estimated to be always full. Next week, that capacity will also be improved. With this situation, we need a minimum of 720 PPE every day, ” he said.

The aid from FK UNAIR, said Dr. Anang, will be prioritized for specialists and residents of Dr. Soetomo Hospital FK UNAIR who are on the frontline of Covid-19 healthcare service. The plan, about 1600 resident doctors will be deployed in turns to help pulmonary specialists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists in treating Covid-19 patients.

“I also hope that the government will always maintain and meet the PPE needs of health workers who are treating patients, both yet confirmed and confirmed positive of Covid-19. Furthermore, other medical equipment, such as ventilators are also needed to treat patients with serious respiratory disorders, “he said.

Besides visiting Dr. Soetomo Hospital, on Thursday, April 9, 2020, UNAIR Faculty of Medicine also delivered aid in the form of 150 Hazmat Sritex suit, 300 face shield, and 48 bottles of hand sanitizer to Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). The representatives were welcomed directly by Director of Education and Training RSUA, Prof. Dr. dr. Muhammad Amin, Sp.P (K) and his staff.

“Previously, we had already given part of it, on March 26th. So, this is the second phase of aid delivery. The amount is different because there are not as many resident doctors as there are at Dr. Soetomo Hospital, “explained Prof. Soetojo.

When receiving FK UNAIR’s visit in Prabu Airlangga Room, 8th floor RSUA, Prof. Amin also expressed his appreciation for the aids given. Like in RSUD Dr. Soetomo, currently, medical assistance is very much needed by RSUA, especially PPE that serves to protect health workers. (*)
