Inaugurating new pharmacists, Dean of Pharmacy: Pharmacists must carry out vision as health officers

UNAIR NEWS – Wednesday, March 11, 2020 became a historic day for 17 participants of 109th UNAIR Pharmacist Professional program as they were officially appointed as pharmacists. The ceremony of taking a pharmacist’s oath was held in the Multi-function Hall of Faculty of Pharmacy, Nanizar Zaman Joenoes Bld, Campus C, Universitas Airlangga.

In the inauguration, UNAIR Faculty of Pharmacy Dean, Prof. Dr. Umi Athiyah, MS. Apt; UNAIR Vice Rector III Prof. Ir. Mochamad Amin Alamsyah, M.Si., Ph.D .; and Drs. Abdul Rahem, M. Kes., Apt as a representative of IAI (Indonesian Pharmacist Association) of East Java were attending. The event was also attended by representatives from East Java Health Office, Surabaya City Health Office, Surabaya Drug and Food Monitoring Agency (BPOM), and several related institutions.

Beside taking the oath of 17 new pharmacists, the Faculty of Pharmacy also gave awards to three of its best graduates. They are Manuel with 3.57 GPA, Gea Ayu with 3.70 GPA, and Fauzul Meliyani with 3.76 GPA.

Dean of FF UNAIR Prof. Umi, in her remarks, said that pharmacists must be able to work with great consciousness and responsibility. She mentioned that, there are 82,000 pharmacists throughout Indonesia carrying out their duties. She hoped that pharmacists can carry out their vision as health officers.

“In carrying out their vision as a health worker, pharmacists in addition to conducting business must also support government efforts. One of them is through the ‘Drug Awareness Community Movement’ program, “said Prof. Umi.

The Drug Awareness Community Movement is a joint effort focused on increasing understanding, awareness, and skills in the field of pharmacy. Pharmacists can play a direct role, not only to guarantee the quality of drugs, but also to provide pharmaceutical care -based services.

“I also hope that pharmacists with other health officers can serve in all parts of the archipelago,” she added.

Besides Prof. Umi, UNAIR Vice Rector III Prof. Amin said that the challenges facing pharmacists are complex. Pharmacists must be able to become leaders in the world of work, especially in the pharmaceutical field. He also asked the new pharmacists to become a superior pharmacist with integrity.

“Besides being able to function as a pharmacist, you also have to be a good partner for other health officers,” said Prof. Amin.

Furthermore, Prof. Amin also asked the new pharmacists to continue to be consistent in maintaining the dignity of the profession. Pharmacists must always be diligent in conducting various studies in the field of health that are beneficial to society.

“Be an Airlangga Knight that is HEBAT, humble, excellent, brave, agile, and transcendent,” he said. “Be an Airlangga Knight who is humble, exceptional in his work and service, brave above the truth, agile, and always depend on God,” concluded Prof. Amen (*)
