UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga held another National Scientific Meeting (TIMNAS) entitled Improving the Quality of Dental Practice Through Basic and Digital Dentistry. It was held in the Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, from Thursday (2/27) to Saturday (2/29).

Several researchers from Singapore, Japan and India were also attending. Some of them were Dr. Jerry Lim Eng Yong, Prof. Lim Ah Tong, Dr. George Anka, Kazuyo Kuribayashi, Prof. Dr. Shailesh Deshmukh, and domestic academics, ministry representatives, alumni, as well as FKG UNAIR academics.

Dean of FKG UNAIR, Dr. R. Darmawan Setijanto, drg., M. Kes., revealed that TIMNAS is routine agenda held every two years. The aim is to improve skills and competencies in the field of dentistry, including research, practice and understanding of developing health technology.

“This is the eighth TIMNAS. In addition to presenting experts, we also invited entrepreneurs, vendors, and factories that produce technology, so the dentist community will be more aware of technology in the field of dental and oral health has developed rapidly, “said drg. Darmawan.

For three days, there were some activities carried out, panel discussions, integrated lectures, scientific lectures, training, exhibitions around the field of dentistry, and the National Scientific Award. There was also a scanning digital interaction training, and discussion about coronavirus, especially for dentists.

“In the past, dentists had to use the modelling compound for the process of molding teeth. In this digital interaction scanning training we introduce the method of printing teeth through scan technology, “said the lecturer at Department of Public Dental Health Sciences (IKGM).

What’s interesting in this TIMNAS, his party chose coronavirus as a topic in the panel discussion. It was done in order to socialize the dangers and share tips to the dental community in order to increase awareness of diseases that have infected thousands of people in several countries.

“Dentists are medical personnel who are vulnerable to being infected by the corona virus. Because, they deal directly with patients when examining the oral cavity. In addition, various diseases can also stick to the equipment used when examining patients. So, we reminded all dentists start to be vigilant, “said drg. Darmawan.

Besides highlighting developments in the field of dentistry, as well as health issues that are developing in the world, drg. Darmawan said that TIMNAS implementation this time was a form of Free Campus implementation which was introduced by the Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud), Nadiem Makariem.

“It’s different from the previous event as we responded to the minister’s recommendation to promote independent learning. So, our students are transferred to study here to attend seminars and training. That way, they also study off campus, “he said.

He hoped that through the implementation of the 8th TIMNAS, all parties involved in the field of dental and oral health, especially dentists, can improve their knowledge and capabilities in modern dentistry management. That way, dentists will be able to provide optimal services to the community.
