UNAIR NEWS – Back to Village (KKN BV) group students of Universitas Airlangga conducted the distribution and planting of avocado seeds in Jorong Hamlet community, Sembalun Bumbung Village, Sembalun District, East Lombok Regency. The work program for planting seeds was carried out during the community service program in the middle of January 2020.
The distribution and seed planting activity are not one of the work programs before. The work program emerged based on the request of Sembalun Bumbung Village Head who wanted to have plants that could be harvested from year to year.
The majority of Sembalun Bumbung Village are vegetable farmers, and the plant is one-crop crops. Thus, Head of Village suggested UNAIR community service program team to plant tree seedlings that will be last for a long time.
BV Community Service Team, which is a combination of 14 students from various faculties at UNAIR agreed on Head of Village recommendation and they consulted to Head of Jorong Hamlet. He suggested avocado seeds, and the plant was chosen because of the high economic value of avocado.
The avocado was given to Jorong Hamlet resident so that the farmers can get profit from that. Avocado seedlings are planted on village land, not each personal property because residents will claim the yields.
“We divide one hundred avocado tree seedlings to the resident of Jorong Hamlet in Sembulan Bumbung Village,” said Najla Tiara, Faculty of Psychology student and one of KKN BV member in East Lombok. The residents are happy with the supply of avocado seeds because avocados have a fairly high price in the local area.
It is hoped that by giving and planting these avocado tree seedlings, the resident of Jorong Hamlet in Sembulan Bumbung Village can learn to plant that is last for a long time. (*)
