UNAIR NEWS – According to the health services of Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), orthodontic treatment is a treatment for malocclusions such as rare teeth, crowding, and advanced teeth. This situation can affect the function and aesthetics of the face so that it becomes less attractive and reduces one’s trust. With one of the orthodontic devices, namely the bracket.

In her research on “The Role of Chitosan in the Orthodontic Bracket Adhesion”, Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Narmada drg., Sp.Ort. (K), first explained the purpose of the research, which was to analyze the antimicrobial inhibitory effects of Streptococcus mutans bacteria and the tensile strength of chitosan and CaCO3-based adhesive bonding material.

“This study aims to analyze the antimicrobial inhibitory effect of Streptococcus mutans and the tensile strength of chitosan and CaCO3-based adhesive bonding material,” she explained.

According to Prof. Ida Bagus, the material used to install brackets on the surface of tooth enamel is adhesive bonding. Not only that, the bacterium Streptococcus mutans contributes to the demineralization of enamel during orthodontic treatment.

The research uses an investigative method which is an experimental laboratory research that features analytic observations and random sampling methods. The antibacterial inhibitory effect of chitosan and the CaCO3-based adhesive bond to Streptococcus mutans involved six groups.

“Two control groups that used commercial adhesive binding products and self-cure commercial adhesives,” she continued.

Four groups were using adhesive bonds consisting of 75% CaCO3 + 17.6% Bis-GMA + 22.4% MMA with various percentages of chitosan composition in each sample (A1: 25%, A2: 50%, A3: 75%, and A4: 100%) each group consists of two samples (n = 12). Besides, diametric tests were carried out, consisting of three samples (n = 15) to measure the tensile strength of each group.

“With data analyzed with a combination of one-way analysis of variance and the most significant difference test,”s he said.

Prof. Ida Bagus revealed that chitosan-based adhesive bonds with good tensile strength have an antibacterial inhibitory effect on Streptococcus mutans. (*)
