UNAIR NEWS – The number of metabolic diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is increasing every year with one of the signs that are sugar (glucose) increase in blood (hyperglycemia). Sugar, which is one of the body’s energy sources, can not be utilized optimally in DM patients because the insulin hormone produced by beta cells in the pancreas is low or normal, but insulin can not work optimally.

One of the risk factors that increase a person affected by DM is lazy to exercise. Therefore, Dr. Lilik Herawati, Dr., M. Kes, AIFO and her colleagues conducted a study to identify variations in exercise choices that are useful for seeing changes in blood sugar levels, pulse rate, and oxygen saturation, before and after exercise.

“The reason for laziness to exercise is certainly diverse. Therefore, this study selected sport that is done while relaxing namely with video games so that it is not boring. It can be used by individuals who have limitations when doing sports movements by standing,” explained by the lecturer in Faculty of Medicine.

Participants as the study object, he added, are 20-year-old male teenagers that were asked to exercise using video game-based exercises (exergaming) facilities. The tool used was a game using console XBOX which has a choice of many sports games.

“Participants in the study divided into three groups, control group, upper only extremities exergaming (upperEx) group, and lower only extremities. While lowerEx groups exercise while resting their hands, “he said.

The results of the study conducted showed that participants who exercise (exergaming) showed a significant decrease in sugar levels than participants who did not exercise. This decrease in blood glucose levels occurs most frequently in the 60th minute (immediately after exercise).

Exercise, while sitting or standing by imitating games has the same effect in reducing blood sugar levels. It can provide various choices in sports for someone who has limited movement, such as complaint on the feet or hands.

“Exercise with exergaming is not boring because it has a varied and fun game choices. Thus, this exercise option will be an alternative to reduce blood sugar levels, “he concluded. Writer : Dian Putri Apriliani Editor : Nuri Hermawan Link : http://efsupit.ro/images/stories/iunie2019/Art%20114.pdf
