UNAIR NEWS – Scabies is a parasitic infection that often caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. The disease often appears but the non-distinctive form often makes it difficult to treat, especially the use of drugs that disguise itching complaints, so misdiagnoses often occur. To make the right diagnosis Dr. Afif Nurul Hidayati dr., Sp.KK, FINS-DV, FAADV., conducted a research on the diagnosis of scabies.

According to her, scabies usually appears in the form of nodules between the fingers and toes, navel area, buttocks, penis in men and periareola in women. Not only that, she also explained that based on the extent and severity, the clinical form of scabies varies greatly, but what special is the discovery of the tunnel.

“Scabies often causes itchiness, it is especially severe at night. The itchiness often persists despite being given anti-scabies drugs, ” she said.

This, continued dr. Afif Nurul, often causes patients seek other treatments and taking drugs such as corticosteroids which cause the clinical form of scabies to be non-disstinctive. Non-typical forms of scabies, she stressed, often occur in individuals with good hygiene and are referred to as scabies incognito.

“The non-typical clinical form often leads to misdiagnosis and can lead to the spread of Sarcoptes scabiei and superinfection that can be life threatening,” she said.

In the end, she also said that the diagnosis of scabies was very important in order to avoid misdiagnoses that can cause many serious things.

“The infection can spread and superinfection can sometimes be life-threatening,” she concluded.
