UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has officially soft-launched five new programs in the field of Engineering. It was launched officially by UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Moh. Nasih at University Assembly at Garuda Mukti Hall, Campus C, on Monday, November 11, 2019.

The five programs are Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology Manipulation Engineering, Data Science Engineering, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Engineering. The programs will be managed in one school, advanced technology and multidisciplinary school.

“We want them to be the new icons at UNAIR. We will let them independent, give them more autonomy and condition them from the beginning with research and innovations. So, a specific unit is needed and it is called as school. So it will not be the same as other faculties, “explained Prof. Moh. Nasih to the media.

Prof. Nasih revealed that there are two things underlying the formation of new engineering programs. First, as a form of contribution to a more advanced Indonesia. According to Prof. Nasih, mastery of technology is one of the parameters of a country’s progress.

“We want to make more real contribution to a more developed Indonesia. Indonesia’s progress is also greatly influenced by the quality of its human resources. One of them is the mastery of technology, “he said.

As stated by the Minister of Research and Technology (Menristek) Bambang Brodjonegoro, continued Prof. Nasih, in the future, mastery of innovative technology must be improved. “As the Minister said earlier, in the future, mastery of this innovative technology must be improved. Therefore, to support and contribute to it, we established and run these five new programs, “he added.

Secondly, as a university known for its comprehensiveness, UNAIR is deemed not optimal and balanced enough in its technological aspects. “UNAIR only has three legs. Social Sciences, Life Sciences, and Health Sciences. So UNAIR is unbalanced. We want to be balanced more in the technical aspects. We also want to give more opportunity for the exacta students to gain knowledge about the future, especially in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, “said UNAIR Rector.

In the future, the engineering programs will be encouraged to work with various disciplines in UNAIR such as in the field of health, psychology, and economics.

“We want them to be multidisciplinary. So, in the future, these engineering programs may not stand alone. We will combine it with the existing faculties, faculties of health, psychology, and economics, “he concluded.

UNAIR will also continue to collaborate with other engineering universities to develop complementary products. UNAIR currently has had several collaborations related to artificial intelligence. Such as the development of virtual reality in the field of anatomy with ITB and artificial intelligence in the field of dental health. (*)
