UNAIR NEWS – Aquaculture Recirculation System is a system that reuse water for aquaculture by re-circulating back through a filter, so it is significantly able to save more water and reduce waste disposal from aquaculture. Recirculation technology is an alternative in overcoming problems of water quality in aquaculture.

It must be understood that the role of bacteria is very important for aquaculture production and sustainability so that it becomes a part in the management of aquaculture in an integrated and holistic manner. In this regard, Wahyu Isroni, S.Pi., MP with the team conducted research to determine the bacterial community in a culture system.

“Natural resources such as water and land which are starting to be limited today make intensification as the most possible choice in increasing aquaculture production. Efforts to develop aquaculture in the intensive system are still ongoing, considering that the system is still constrained by various problems, “said the lecturer of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK).

Bacteria in fish culture systems, he added, function to decompose leftovers, organic compounds from dissolved feed, and fish droppings. The garbage can pollute the water and become a place to grow pathogenic bacteria, fungi or bad microbes, and cause fish to be easily attacked by diseases.

“The research that I did with the team on the cultivation of African catfish (C. gariepinus) with the recirculation system used 3 units of recirculation ponds. Round tarpaulin ponds with a diameter of 1 m and a height of 1 m pool as a container for cultivation. Then the filters used are swirl filters and biological filters using bioball filters, “he added.

The results of this study showed average temperature was in the range of 28-30 ° C, the results of measurements of dissolved oxygen levels was 4.3 – 4.8 Mg / L and pH are at normal values, 7.6. Moreover, several species of bacteria were found such as Bacillus subtili and Bacillus megaterium, Empedobacter brevis, Spingomonas paucimobilis, Staphilococcus vitulus, Stapilococus xylosus, Bacillus cereus, and  Bacillus lincheniformis.

“Understanding the bacterial community structure in the system is important to know the mapping of community structure, diversity and various related factors. Therefore, with this research, we hope to provide information related to this matter, “he concluded.
