UNAIR NEWS – Rizky Amelia Zein, S.Psi., M.Si, a lecturer at Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) became the only delegation from Indonesia who participated in Triangle Science event on October 13-17 at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, America. The theme chosen for this year was justice in scholarly communication related to imbalances or inequities that occur in scholar communication.
Triangle Sci is an organization founded by three libraries of three different universities in one area. Namely, Duke University, University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University.
“In this event, we discussed how science could accommodate all contexts and people. We want to make sure that our voices can be heard around the globe,” explained Amel.
During the activity, she focused on discussing strategies to make the journal peer review process more accessible. The aim is eliminating discrimination against scientists from the South.
According to Amel, the conditions experienced by scientists in the South are quite unfair. Scientists are forced to compete with this situation.
The imbalance can be seen in the resources owned by scientists from the West is far better than those owned by scientists in the South. In terms of mentoring, which is owned by scientists from the West, it is also far better than those in the South.
“In the discussion, we identified what part of the inequality and the strategy to overcome the inequality,” she continued.
Furthermore, she also planned to propose a grant to conduct community outreach activities as a long-term follow-up of the strategy that had been generated. (*)
