UNAIR Nursing Master Program Invites the Community to Recycle Plastic Waste

UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Nursing (FKp) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held a socialization program on recycling plastic waste and making it as a craft. A total of 15 FKp UNAIR Masters students conducted community service independently, and the activity was motivated by one of the tri dharma higher education values.

The event was held at Keputih Harmony Park and Surabaya Bamboo Forest on Sunday, October 20. The theme was “Community Empowerment in Waste Management through ASIK FARMERS (Training to Increase Plastic Waste Selling Value).” The event took place at 3 p.m -5 p.m and attended by 30 participants from the garbage dump, TPA Keputih, and they worked as scavengers or garbage pickers.

Head of the event,  Rifqy Octavia Pradipta, S.Kep., Ns revealed the reason for choosing a place in Taman Harmoni is helping scavengers to increase their income by processing plastic and cardboard waste.

“We invite the participants through Mr. Agung, who is the coordinator of scavengers in the TPA Keputih area and also conducts training on recycling plastic or cardboard waste by crafting technique,” he added.

Dr. Tintin Sukartini S.Kep., M.Kes. as the supervisor explained UNAIR FKp Master Program has four specializations. Thus, they could carry out eight community service activities in one semester. In that activity, they focused on recycling plastic waste, including using cooking oil to be biodiesel.

“We are also working with Indonesian Garbage Entrepreneurs Association (APSI), they will collect plastic waste that has been collected along with used cooking oil, and we do a demonstration on recycling cardboard waste and make it as photo frames,” he concluded.

In the end, they got free food, and the event closed with a joint photo session between the committee and participants, the target community will be evaluated to find out about future developments after ASIK FARMERS program. (*)
