UNAIR NEWS – Batik is one of Indonesia’s famous cultural heritages in various parts of the world. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has designated batik as one of the Humanitarian Heritage for Non-Cultural Culture for Indonesia on October 2, 2009 which is also commemorated as National Batik Day.
Ahmad Fahmi Ramadhan as the Deputy of the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) of Universitas Airlangga revealed that gaining popularity, but it has not been able to spread as a whole. “The problem now is that batik does not cover all elements of society,” he said.
Fahmi added that the Indonesian people, especially students who would become the nation’s successors, should be proud of one of the national identities by being proud in wearing batik clothes.
“BEM FST is currently trying to initiate batik day movement through the ‘Let’s wear batik Guys (ABG)’ agenda as a form of our pride in our nation’s identity,” he said.
Fahmi also explained that in several regions in Indonesia each has its own pattern of batik. It shows that the Indonesia is a nation with a lot of diversity. The encouragement to wear batik is expected to make batik even more popular as the nation’s identity and create a sense of unity with various characteristics of batik in regions.
The activity was initially carried out every month on Tuesday in the first week. However, due to the positive response from the FST community, the activity was held twice a month. Precisely on Tuesday in the first and second week.
“Let’s preserve together the identity of this nation. You are Indonesian youth, you are the next generation of the nation and you are part of this nation, the Indonesian nation, ” he said.
To invite more students to participate and as an expression of appreciation, BEM FST also gives prizes to FST students who wear batik clothes and upload their pictures on Instagram. (*)
