UNAIR Develops Library Service using Facebook

UNAIR NEWS   Library is trying to provide maximum services to its users. For college libraries such as Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), which is also user-oriented, the existence of Facebook has a significant impact. Because Facebook can facilitate interaction between librarians without being bound by existing geographical boundaries.

For three years since it was created, the presence of UNAIR Library Facebook account has gained enthusiasm from users. Most users use UNAIR library facebook to get information they need related to UNAIR library activities.

Undeniably, Facebook is one of the most popular social networking media and has penetrated all aspects of Indonesian communities and even the world’s, including the college library community.

After doing research, Dessy Harisanty, S. Sos., M.A. a lecturer of Universitas Airlangga D3 Library Program, said that through facebook,  UNAIR library could provide the information sought by the user by taking the characteristics of quality information into account, the relevant and up-to-date one.

Facebook can be a medium for libraries to provide maximum services and appropriate with the characteristics of its users,” she said.

Facebook can provide information effectively and quickly to library members. The existence of facebook considered to enhance the role of the library as an information and knowledge center, to disseminate information quickly and accurately.

Through Facebook, the library also tries to socialize with users, so the users feel intimate and more comfortable with the library. Facebook is also considered as a more updated media than other media. Through Facebook, users can interact directly with UNAIR library because it is equipped with various features such as chatting, photo tags, blogs, games, and status updates.

“Facebook can be a recommendation for other libraries to develop user-oriented services such as UNAIR Library,” she said. Even so, the library must continue to update the information presented. Thus, the library and the users will remain connected. (*)
