UNAIR NEWS – To celebrate the 74th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, the Language Center of Universitas Airlangga (Pusba UNAIR) held some competitions for UNAIR students. Interestingly, the international students studying at UNAIR also participated in the competitions. Eighteen international students looked very enthusiastic about participating in the competition held on Thursday, August 15, 2019.

It was the second time for PUSBA to hold this celebration event. The person in charge of the BIPA Program (Indonesian Language Program for Non-Indonesian Speakers), Iyun Witari said that this event was held to introduce Indonesian culture to the international students on Independence Day.

“Besides learning the language, we want to introduce our culture. This competition is one of the ways doing it, ” she explained.

Pusba UNAIR held four kinds of fun competitions in the celebration, crisps eating race, inserting nails in bottles, balloon race, and rubberband relay. The international students taking part in the competition were from Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Myanmar, and Sudan.

“They (UNAIR international students, ed) are mostly from Africa and Asia,” she added.

Iyun hoped that through this competition, the international students can learn about Indonesian culture through this independence day. After learning Indonesian for one year, the international students study at their respective faculties, so they rarely go to the language center.

“Through this event, I also want to gather them back, because when they were still learning Indonesian, they usually study in one class here (in Pusba),” she added.

One international student from Yemen, Mohammad Ahmad Al Junaid, said he was very happy to take part in the event. The Master’s degree student of Faculty of Dental Medicine student also thanked Pusba UNAIR for organizing the event.

“I am happy and very much enjoyed participating in this event. Thank you for everything, thank you UNAIR, for organizing this event, ” he said. (*)
